If you already have a registered birth certificate and need a digital copy, you may be able to download it online instead of visiting a government office.
In India, the exact process depends on where the birth was registered and which authority issued the certificate. Many government records are also available through DigiLocker, while the Civil Registration System (CRS) provides online birth and death registration services for participating States and Union Territories.

How to Download Birth Certificate From DigiLocker
DigiLocker is another option for accessing government-issued digital documents.
Go to the official DigiLocker website or app, sign in to your account and search for the relevant birth certificate service under available documents or issuers.
DigiLocker works with government departments and other registered issuers to provide authentic digital documents. Whether your birth certificate is available depends on whether the relevant issuing authority has integrated its records with DigiLocker.
Once the record is available, you can access it through the Issued Documents section.
Important Difference
A document directly issued through DigiLocker is different from a file that you simply upload yourself. DigiLocker explains that issued documents come from the government department or authorized issuer, while uploaded documents are files added by the user.
Can I Download a Birth Certificate Without a Registration Number?
It depends on the portal and the records available.
Some systems may allow you to search using other information, while others require the registration number or details from the original record.
If you cannot locate your record online, contact the local birth registrar or municipal authority where the birth was registered.
What If My Birth Certificate Is Not Available Online?
Not every older birth record is necessarily available for online download.
If your certificate cannot be found, check the relevant local registrar, municipal corporation or state government birth registration service. You may need to request a copy or have an older record digitized, depending on the authority’s procedure.
DigiLocker also cannot independently change information contained in a government document. For corrections, users need to contact the department that issued the document.
Is Birth Certificate Download Free?
The availability and charges can vary depending on the issuing authority and the type of service requested.
Do not assume that every website offering a “birth certificate download” is an official government website. Check the website address and use government portals or the official DigiLocker platform whenever possible.
Final Words
Downloading a birth certificate online can save time when your birth record is already registered and available digitally.
Start with the official birth registration authority for the place where the birth was registered. You can also check DigiLocker to see whether the issuing authority has made your certificate available electronically.
If the record cannot be found online, contact the local registrar or municipal authority rather than submitting your personal information to an unofficial website.
